One of the biggest problems with the idea of electric vehicles is the additions to demand for electric power. Solar and wind are just too intermittent. California blackouts are just the first example of insufficient supply.
And California has put heavy reliance on nearby states, with fossil capability to carry thru, to help cover their dips in local production. Imaging these "painful" scenarios -- Gee can't make it to work today as there wasn't enough power to charge my vehicle. Gee the hospital lost its power so people died. Gee the needed meds didn't get here in time as the delivery trucks were delayed. Gee the power has become so expensive that some retirees on fixed income are getting to be poverty cases. California is leading the nation in power costs. And that pattern is repeated in foreign countries placing increasing reliance on wind & solar. Have you heard about the prices of batteries for Toyota Prius cars? About $6,000 (including installation) for new, and about $4,000 for rebuilt, for my Long Island relatives, a couple yrs ago. And the Prius is just a small vehicle. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Tom, Just a quick thought on the 'painful elimination' of fossil fuels... First; ain't gonna happen if we are to continue trucking, freight training,* ocean shipping and airlineing. However, electric autos will reduce demand; which is my second... Second; demand will be reduced to the extent that tens of 000's of wells will be capped. Now, just what will be the result of that... scarcity; and, scarcity drives up demand and demand drives up costs. So, we can look forward to (for example) $xx a gallon gas for remaining combustions, and ENORMOUS fuel costs for the intermodals mentioned above. Wanna fly to the coast? Take out a 2nd mortgage. * electrifying the country's entire rail system is a non-starter. Why do you think the catenaries end at Harrisburg? Electric power insufficient for mountain climbing. Bob |
