I find the VIP section useful for the occasional private conversation with a member*, and sometimes two members want to chat about something personal and I'll move their conversation into VIP, so I want to keep it, but it isn't the heart of the forum for me.

* private conversations are a pain in the tush because once you've read them the threads are very hard to find again--essentially impossible without manually doing a "read every message to me" thing--no way for someone who gets dozens of messages a day.
