Most folks can recall how Robert Byrd (Dem, West Va.) was a KKK member.
From a history report, there's the story: -- of how Robert Byrd organized 150 new KKK members to sign up and open a new local chapter of the Klan in his home town, in the 1940's. For these efforts Byrd was awarded the KKK title of "Exalted Cyclops" by the Klan's Grand Dragon. And that same Grand Dragon guy recommended the Byrd could become a politician. Byrd went on to established records as the longest serving person in congress Here's that report, showing many more details: Click Here |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Seems most folks can recall the Democrat KKK Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd who was in congress for a number of years. One of Byrd's votes was to filibuster, opposing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, along with such well known Democrats as William Fulbright and Al Gore Sr. Image below from THemmick - Image Title: Political irony in the 1860's Image Info: Ironic political alignments, after the civil war era, in the 1860's |
