Yes, duplication is possible in nicknames, but the members generally sort that out themselves. Everyone wants to be unique, after all.
We only suggest first name and last initial in the event of duplicates, like five people named Sarah, which happens quite a bit in a busy forum. Oh, and members can have different nicknames in different forums -- it's stored in the forum's database, not the user's information, although the latter contains a default nickname for use in new (to the user) forums. As an example, we do have two "Joanna B"s, but one goes by the nickname JoB, while the other is joannab. Their AOL/AIM screen names, which is what they use to sign in, are unique, of course. Since neither posts every day, though, I almost always do a double-take when I run across a message from either of them -- "Which Joanna B is this?" I have at least four different nicknames in different forums. (I don't stick strictly to Books & Writers.) |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Well, if two people have the same first and last name then their first name and last initial will also be the same???? Anyway, I suppose I could have both worlds and not require unique first and last names as is now the case, rather allow same first last combinations but also require a nickname or screenname that must be unique. If only the nickname is displayed in messages then what is the purpose of asking for first and last name? |
