"Like CompuServe used to be"? It still is... and we just ask users to use their first name and last initial if there's going to be any confusion. It's called a "nickname" and is what is displayed in messages. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I am considering having users login to the forum using their email address and a password, rather than their forum name and password. Email addresses are always unique and it might make users more conscious of the email they use in the forum, hopefully prompting more of them to update their email if they start using a new one. As a by product this would also allow different users to have the same name.... like CompuServe used to be and Facebook now. Not sure I want to do this but am thinking it over. Now messages display a user name in the from/to fields. Certainly if multiple users had the same name it could cause confusion. Solve this? Well, one way would be to show a user name like so Tom Smith(3427) with the number being their user id and that is always unique. Anyway, just some outloud thinking on the name business at this point. |
