Another benefit if the new marked-as-read code works out:

A user could just read all new messages in a single section on each visit and that individual section would always be up to date when showing new messages.

My only concern on this, as mentioned previously, is the paging is somewhat slower.

PS -- a immenient code update will result in Sysops seeing  500 new messages until you mark all as read.... or read them all.
