Ahh, figured out a concrete example of backspace hi-jinks.  Highlight something while editing a message and press the backspace key and one is returned to the un-edited message.  It does seem dependent on whether or not you place your cursor at the front or the back of the sentence(s) when you highlight it.  I believe starting the highlight process from the end of the sentence is the problem, have to check for the other direction.
