I grew up much closer to the school, at 832 S. Glenwood, near the intersection of Walnut and Lawrence. (Wonder if it's in Google street view?) An older section of town; our house was built in 1908 and had a coal-fired furnace when we moved there in 1950. My first home, which I barely remember, was at 809 S. Park, about 6 blocks farther west. I think the last time I was there was in 2004 for Mom's funeral, although my brother's kids sometimes go back for the state fair. (They still have relatives there on their mom's side.) I at least know where all the major streets you mentioned are -- Wabash Ave. and Chatham Rd. were the edges of town when I grew up! Yeah, the city's really grown. I almost got lost the last time I visited. All of us Baby Boomers made SHS overcrowded. I had to share a locker, and we had two overlapping shifts at school. There were something like 530 in my graduating class. I hope it wasn't as crowded when you were there. Still, we got a good education. Gotta run. TTYL. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Far out! SHS Class of '73! Small world indeed! Where abouts did you live in Springfield John? I grew up in what was a new subdivision at the time called Colony West, on Clifton Drive. It was bordered by Wabash Ave on the south and West Iles on the north, although West Iles didn't go through from Chatham Rd in those days and was just a neighborhood street--on the map now it looks like a major thoroughfare. When I moved there out back yard bordered a corn field--now the city extends for miles west. I haven't been there in years--no family left there--how about you? |
