Section 11: Administration Subject: Staff Flags Msg# 769372

I hope some of the flags aren't mutually exclusive. I can see a Host having need for an Editor flag, for example. Not sure why you have two separate flags in this case. Yes, I think we need to keep a private section for users, whether you call it VIP or allow us to rename the section. It came in very handy in Books for our Writers Workshop, where works-in-progress had to be kept out of the public eye for legal reasons (copyright and first publication). Having flags for each area of a forum seems like an administrative headache to me, but maybe I've got a vivid imagination. And I'll definitely have to keep my Wizop flag, since Alex hasn't been here since 2008 (last I checked) and I'm effectively the forum manager. Not much to manage these days, but there you have it. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Mark and All, I thought we could discuss the issue of staff flags. I purposely limited almost all staff functionality to those with WizopForum flags when rewriting the code until most all the bugs were squashed..... and until I finish the new admin code. Flags that can be set are WizopForum, Sysop, Host (Staff), VIP, and Editor. WizopForum flag allows pretty much full control over all aspects of a forum except for a few items necessarily limited to only me. So, lets talk about the flags under WizopForum and what a forum manager (WizopForum) might like to allow those given various flags to do. For starters, a Sysop flag should be almost or the same as WizopForum, or perhaps used for some other functionality. Staff/Host flag would allow certain control of message board admin. Editor has never been used as a practical matter, but could be used for admin of images, features, and news. VIP's only function is to allow access to the VIP message section. I'm not sure the section or the flag are of much use, and are a hold over from when the code was written over 10 years ago when an associate at the time thought it woud be a good idea. One use for the flag would be for a special section of a forum for some group who wish to have a private section and each can be given access on a request basis. Finally, we can look at the entire issue of flags and think out of the existing box. We could add new flags for a staff person to administer polls, administer calendar, administer news,... images, articles, video, messages. In short, a flag for each separate area of a forum with a flag name appropriate for the admin function. The floor is open. |
