Well said. lots of good points you've made. And here's the one's I savored the most. You wrote: likewise being unrealistic about goals of "reducing carbon emissions" without any careful consideration about economics or human impact can lead to catastrophe as well. All these high brow ideals are nothing if they are either impossible or so difficult that you would completely wreck everyone's lives in trying to attain them. "infinitely delay" such a foolish goal entirely, i.e., to do it never. (underlines& bold added) Drum roll, applause, unfurl old glory PS The Earth has warmed and cooled in cycles, over the eons, and life has thrived. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Dad It seems you've had detailed and good comments to give me all my life and your efforts in this direction have not stopped now, nor have they slowed down! And I am happy to hear your carefully considered thoughts forever, so please continue onward and I will always listen with careful attention to every word. The only point of potential disagreement we might have is what you say about China and Russia and India delaying until later. I think it is GOOD to delay Net Zero goal, or even to "infinitely delay" such a foolish goal entirely, i.e., to do it never. Apart from that I hear you and agree completely. There is too much an attitude of "damn the details, we need this" Well if you damn the details, then you damn the whole country and throw out the baby with the bath water, as the saying goes. Its the difference between the Ivory Tower and the reality on the ground. All these high brow ideals are nothing if they are either impossible or so difficult that you would completely wreck everyone's lives in trying to attain them. Philosopher Robert M. Pirsig (author of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and a second book less frequently read "Lila: An Inquiry into Morals") writes about the destructive force of intellectuals who take into account *only* a few good sounding things, which they think should be striven for in spite of the cost. But wrecking our police force and justice system in the name of protecting some special groups from being being "unfairly targeted" is itself unfair in that it targets the whole society by leaving violent criminals on the streets. And likewise being unrealistic about goals of "reducing carbon emissions" without any careful consideration about economics or human impact can lead to catastrophe as well. Yours, Doug P.S. You should read Pirsig "Lila: An Inquiry into Morals" because he explains how morality and doing the right thing follow from pure position of objective logic. And he explains why the liberal position is nuts. |
