For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Even liberals don't define woke the way your meme does. I looked up about a dozen different definitions and this one was about the most common: Woke is a word which originally referred to awareness about racism and discrimination. It later came to include an awareness of other issues of social inequality, for example regarding gender and sexual orientation. Since the late 2010s it has also been used as a general word for left-wing political movements and viewpoints which emphasize the identity politics of people of color (those who are not white), LGBT people, and women. And keep in mind this and all of the ones I found were all sympathetic definitions. Nothing about "thoughtful, compassionate, eager to make the world a better place, etc etc." That was nonsense some individual added, completely off the beaten path. Woke is clearly a political word, nothing more. |
