Thank you for explaining guns to the former active duty infantry Marine who served at the height of two ground wars. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: ...gleefully brandishing things whose general sole purpose is to effectively kill people. It's a sign of ignorance to state that the sole purpose of firearms is to kill people. And I don't say that lightly. The vast majority of people do not own firearms to use to kill people at all. Firearms are mostly used for multiple sporting competitions, such as IPSC, IDPA, metallic silhouette, Bianchi Cup, NRA Bullseye, GSSF, and probably a dozen more sports that emphasize accuracy, time, or both. Firearms are also used for hunting, which is a time-honored activity that hearkens back to all of our ancestors, who were once required to hunt for food--or starve. Hunting continues today as part of herd control and is counted on by state conservation departments to assure that excessively large herds do not die lingering deaths over winter seasons due to lack of food. But perhaps the purpose most important purpose to most gun owners is to protect self and to protect loved ones from the those who would do them harm--great bodily harm or death. Only a tiny number of evil people have guns to harm others, but that is all you can think of and mention. It's sad and pathetic. As to the photo in the original message, this family obviously enjoys the shooting sports, and their happy faces reflects that. To speak so ill of a clearly loving family that enjoys togetherness the way they almost assuredly do is disturbing, to say the least. It is a very sad thing that a certain part of our society can only look at firearms, even in the hands of happy, law-abiding people, and still go right to "guns = killing." It's sickening. People who think that way are not okay. |
