The main differences are that, one, you will only receive email notifications of messages addressed to you (if you have that service turned on), and, two, the forum only keeps track of actual messages addressed to you when it tracks new messages to you--which is somewhat obvious. 
It does keep trtack of all new messages, and also keeps track of which ones you have and have not read, nevertheless. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Oh you are SO right...NOT my goal! I was really wondering about the "all" vs the " barry Oehl" ...I get both, particularly replies to my posts and wanted to make sure everyone could read them, so thanks for that |
