Pretty soon we're gonna have one "environmental" group at war with another "environmental" group. Who woulda thought it.... | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Thanks for that posting. It shows just one of the huge drawbacks of Wind Turbines, frequent blade failures. And the offshore variety of wind turbines have even worse results. Recall that last summer's turbine blade failure at Nantucket beach was a big eye opener. It was made worse by the fact it was failure of a brand new project. Then there's the closure of a resort beach, causing negative impacts on tourism. What mothers could allow their kids to be playing on that beach while there was a couple months when sharp shards of fiberglass were washing up onto the shore. Cleaning up all that fractured blade debris as it spreads thru the waters, seems a monumental effort. And imagine the discomfort of eating seafood coming from those waters. Another negative to the area's economy. Take heed Ocean City MD, and other coastal wind turbine projects. Such hazards can wreck a seashore town's economy. New Jersey has been fortunate with Federal authorities suspending support of the NJ coastal wind projects. And in New England there are objections to another offshore project. The Nantucket offshore wind opposition group is petitioning the EPA to review Clean Air Act permits issued for New England Wind 1 and 2, the same type of permits that on Friday, March 21 were pulled from New Jersey projects. Connecticut has also withdrawn from offshore projects. I'd only wish the Feds would follow the same stoppages here in MD. Recently another lawsuit has been filed against the project off of Virginia Beach offshore wind project. The 61-page complaint to a District of Columbia federal court requests work stoppage under the Endangered Species Act. There are a number of Wind Farm difficulties beyond blade failures piling up in scrap yards, plus the seafood and recreational fishing industry impacts , tourism disruptions, as well as the problems of Endangered Species. The hazards of lightning strikes can demolish an entire unit, burning up all its blades as well as the electrical turbine unit. The turbines have much shorter life spans, compared to traditional power plants lasting 35 to 50 years or more. Ten to fifteen years is common for wind turbines. Six out of ten turbines are out of service at Canada's Prince Edward Island wind project, after 10 years of recurring problems.
