Mark: Doug has asked me to forward this message to you, Tom
“Hi Mark Thanks for commenting on the meme I posted about the refusal of the Russian research by the journal who denied the right to publish. First of all let’s note that the post you are commenting on was one that I put up 3 years ago Mar 2022. Although the Ukraine war has continued, it’s good to note the date just for the record… Journal publication in science is ideally free of any sort or favoritism and also international political issues or opinions and so on. But the reality is something different indeed. Politics can and does affect science and publication especially in research areas which are entangled with government idealism and / or political goals. We have seen the government get its hands dirty in medical science with the vaccines and also with climate change. The powers and authorities of the academic scientists are always much weaker than the powers of the government bureaucracies every time. And governments do get involved with international relationships during wartimes and it’s no surprise that research of Russian scientists would get rejected solely based on their nationality and not the merit of the work. When major conflicts happen it does affect other spheres of international activities and yes that includes science too. Thanks Mark and thanks for engaging in dialogue with my dad. Yours, |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: That seems unfortunate. Aren't scientists scientists everywhere--unless their respective government is keeping a thumb on them--which I'm sure is true in some countries. China comes to mind, as does the recent U.S. Biden administration--though I believe that was an anomaly and not the case before or since.
