I understand that point of view, re: a bridge to far. For consideration, however, attitudes are in fact changing when it comes to legal gun owners and their carry rights. To whit--everyone is no doubt familiar with the requirement for FFL dealers to complete an instant background check as part of gun sales. That consists of phoning in or going online to check the gun buyer's records before completing the sale. Well, it turns out that states have gotten so thorough in their own background checks when issuing concealed carry licenses--covering the same information (and more)--that something like 24 states no longer require the FFL dealer to conduct the instant background check when selling the gun--as long as the buyer shows his concealed carry license (the number of which is recorded on the paperwork, of course). State legislatures simply realized the background investigation to acquire a carry license, was far more than what was happening with the call to the Feds.
The general population is beginning to realize that concealed firearms carriers are among the safest and most responsible citizens in this nation. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: If we are going to allow terrorists to carry box cutters on those same flights, yes. Any sensible conversation just ended except you say you were not being serious. In all seriousness, if we just allow people with carry license to carry on board, then yes. Sorry, I don't agree. And I suspect 80% of the country agrees with me. It is a b ridge too far. |
