Here's a report about the US existing military base located in the north western part of Greenland, published by Stars & Stripes, the military's media news source.

Some highlights:

Since the 1940s, the Pentagon has valued Greenland, which serves as a gateway to the Arctic.
During the Cold War, the military had more than 10,000 troops in that territory,
A ballistic missile early warning mission still carries on there.
About 200 active-duty U.S. Air Force and Space Force personnel are part of that effort,
Importance in recent years is based upon concerns about Russia’s growing military presence in the Arctic.
China also has signaled an intent to play a larger role in the region, declaring itself in 2018 a “near-Arctic country” with vested interests.
In 2023, four Air Force F-35s were deployed for the first time at the base to show off the ability to operate in harsh terrain.
Regarding mineral resources, much more needs to be done to realize Greenland’s full potential in supporting the American economic and security interests.

Seems plenty of reasons for increased attention on Greenland, whether or not there's some treaty, agreement, or some ownership. Both commerce and military interests appear as pending opportunities there.

And there's been plenty of examples of land purchases in US history, such as Louisiana, & Alaska purchases of territories, as well as some Caribbean islands.

And Prez Trump himself spoke to a group of Greenland citizens over the phone.

He said: "I just want to say it's a very special place. It needs security for itself, but it also needs security very much for the world. You see the people and the ships sailing around, and they're not the right ships, and they're not the ships you wanna know about," the president-elect told the group. "So we need security. Our country needs it, and the whole world needs it — you're so strategically located."
