But yet here we are indebted to China, and Japan.
And lots of others. Looking at the total national debt of $34 trillion, Japan and China are the least of our debt problems. As of January 2023, the five countries owning the most US debt are Japan ($1.1 trillion), China ($859 billion), the United Kingdom ($668 billion), Belgium ($331 billion), and Luxembourg ($318 billion). According to the Federal Reserve and U.S. Department of the Treasury, foreign countries held a total of eight trillion U.S. dollars in U.S. treasury securities as of January 2024. The $34 trillion gross federal debt equals debt held by the public plus debt held by federal trust funds and other government accounts. In very basic terms, this can be thought of as debt that the government owes to others plus debt that it owes to itself. Learn more about different ways to measure our national debt. The only way this country digs it's way out of this mess is by electing strong leaders and people actually understanding who they vote for. Unfortunately, there is that tad problem of half the voters or more disagree with who you might want elected. National Debt Clock: What Is the National Debt Right Now? (pgpf.org) |
