Description: Early in his first term as President, Ronald Reagan saw the need for the US to develop the technology to intercept attacking missles and shoot down spy satellites. His numerous liberal critics mercilessly attacked his plans as being both unfeasible and unnecessary. The inability of the Soviet Union to match this development in a timely manner contributed to the collapse of the USSR in the late 1980's.
