Description: When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Lee was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. When Lincoln summoned him to Washington to be offered command of US forces, he had to hide his US Army uniform as he rode through the length of the Confederacy to return to his home in Arlington and meet with General Winfield Scott. His decision at the time of his surrender to General Grant not to disburse his forces to carry on the war as guerilla bands began the slow healing process that brought the two nations together again.
