No advice. You could remind the fellow that 28 gazillion Facebook users have their real names online. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: A new member, Kevin Hutter, wrote me this: When I registered it asked me for my first & last name, but did not give me an option to set my user name that will show on the forum. I would like to change my user name to: RockyMtnKevin I read in your message that this forum doesn't really do screen names, but I can't afford LifeLock so I take all precautions I can, everywhere I can. I replied with: As to your screen name, the way the owner has it set up right now, we require a first and last name. I can ask if I can put in a single name but I don't know at this point. I can tell you that we have been using first and last names here for fifteen years and never had a problem with them. While I don't deny that identity theft is a real problem in this country, using screen names on forums is not really a way to prevent it. If you look around the Internet, many writers are using full names, bloggers are using full names, and despite the prevalence of screen names, full names aren't uncommon on forums either. Identity theft is usually caused by other behaviors. Any advice, Joe? |
