Section 6: Message Board Subject: New messages added to que Msg# 829157

The only reason for the original long timeout was because of the way the HMN was tracked. In the past if you went to the message board and began reading messages, if you timed out and received a fresh login you would most likely miss seeing messages.
That has all changed now. You never miss a message unless you are away so long that there are more than 500 new messages since last visit. The previous long timeout also caused data storage to balloon. I suspect the vast majority of regular users come to a forum, read the messages and leave. In the event they start reading messages and walk away from the computer for more than 20 minutes, their next click to move forward in the messages they were reading will cause a new login and a resultant new set of messages. However, they will not miss any new messages from prior to the login. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Why do we have this 20 minute login? I know from talking to lots of people over the years that they often leave the forum open, walk away, then come back and carry on. Especially with so many retired members, they can do this when their computer is at home and their forum time is interspersed with normal home activities. But then I know you always have a good reason for doing the things you do, thus I ask. |
