Next time you see a spam message please move it to Sysop section and let me know so I can take a look and delete the user if necessary. I moved it to Staff. This guy was from China, and kept replying to himself -- and of course all the replies went into Staff, too. He finally stopped. Edit: He's back. Sent a message to Alex, which I moved to Sysop. Name is "Yi Chen", and I set him to Lock Message in the meantime. Yeah, it was a little excitement... |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Setting a user flag to CanPost = False does absolutely nothing unless the entire forum is first set to a CanPostForum and I'm the only one who can currently do that. Not a good idea unless the spam is way too much because then a manager has to set the flag for every user before they can post. Once a forum is set to CanPost anyone can join but they can't post until sending a request for posting privliges to the manager. LM is effective immediately, but it won't stop a new join from posting spam. Typically those spammers are just hit and run anyway. Most are from Russia and eastern Europe. They join, post and then rarely ever return. All they want are messages with a link to some site in the theory the more links the higher the google ranking. They fake their emails, they fake their IP, etc. I have a way to recognize the pro spammers and have some code in place that allows me to delete the user from every forum as well as all messages by the user in every forum. It is a constant battle. Next time you see a spam message please move it to Sysop section and let me know so I can take a look and delete the user if necessary. BTW, a little spam might be of some value in Books.... its the only thing posted. |
