I meant editable area, such as editable area 2.

I click on editable area 2.  Say I want a photo there for the home page.  I don't want this photo viewable in the Vault or Gallery, so it needs to go into the "articles image" area (which we used to call "features images." 

From the editable area edit window I click on the film canister, then article images, then add images.  The upload box appears.  I follow the upload procedure.

I just tried it again and received this follow-on message, and my image was no uploaded:
