Description: Knitted Stuffed Toy Bear
Oct. 2006 About 9 inches tall.
Based on a pattern, but it had mistakes and I didn't like the face (too grumpy, Xs for eyes) or ears, or the way it was assembled & stuffed, so I improvised quite a bit.
The pattern bear was all stuffed from the bottoms of the feet, but I did my feet & arms with a 2-needle cast on (like toe-up socks), knitted up to the neck, stuffed the body, then knitted the head and stuffed it from the top.
I added the embroidered duplicate stitch heart, and the socks/boots, which are knitted as part of the legs (don't come off ), and cooked up the sweater (bare bear looked cold.)
Both the sweater and bear made in one piece in round on sock needles. The bear was knit from the feet up, the only seam at the top of the head (Kitchner stitch), except for the ears which are sewn on. The sweater too knit in round, only has a cast off at the collar.
DK 25% wool, 75% acrylic beige & dark red yarn. Stuffed with 2 in long pieces of a spare skein of acrylic yarn -I didn't have any regular stuffing handy, but the yarn made a great springy stuffing.
The pattern I started with was by Lucie Sinkler in a little magazine type booklet I found at my newstand called Knitting for Babies.
