Description: This is the beginning of the Book of Luke in a French "Evangeliaire" from the early Carolingian period (about 800 A.D.). It is an illuminated manuscript on parchment. The black marks are actually tarnished silver. The color in this image is slightly off, because they had just put filters over the light sources; in "real life", the parchment is a creamy white.
